Frequently Asked Questions

How do I uninstall the shareware screen saver if I decide not to keep it?

The simplest way is to go into the Control Panel and open Add/Remove Programs and click to uninstall what you choose not to keep from there. If for some reason the screen saver does not show up, you can go to

C:/Windows

find the XXX.scr file (XXX = the name of the file) and delete it from there.

Can I use the themes and screensavers found on this site on my Windows XP?

All of these themes and screensavers will work with XP!

You will need XP Plus! or Desktop Architect which can be downloaded from our Utilities page. Just click on the Utilities Link just above this one on the main Index page.

To run them on your XP, you will need to right click on your desktop and choose properties, and then choose Windows classic.

How do I install themes?

Once the theme is downloaded you must run the installation program. Our downloaded .exe files include 2 installers,1 for the theme and 1 for the screensaver. You must open your theme manager and apply the theme, which includes the screensaver. Go to Start... Settings... Control Panel.

Double click on the program called Desktop Themes which is the Microsoft Theme Manager, or Desktop Architect (recommended) if you have installed it.

Choose the theme you want to use and click apply. Click ok and the theme is installed. If you do not see either of these programs in your control panel, see the next question on how to set your computer up to run themes.

Is there any way to turn off the sounds for the screensaver without turning the volume down?

All of our screensavers can be fully configured by following the steps below:

Right click on your desktop and choose properties.

Click on the screensavers tab.

Make sure the screensaver you want to configure is showing in the drop down menu and click on settings.

A new window will open with a box of options. There should be a check in front of each option you want the screensaver to display.

NOTE: We strongly recommend not changing the cycle images time or the alphabetize images option if it is checked. Some of our screensavers are created with images in alphabetical order to display in the sequence intended. Un-checking this option could cause a malfunction or cause the screensaver to produce duplicate images in the same frame.

Everything else is configurable. The images floating around the screen are called animated sprites. If you do not want these images, uncheck the box. The same goes for the sound, music and slideshow. If you un-check the show slideshow box, only the animated sprites will show when the screensaver activates. You might want to write down the settings before you change them if your tempted to play, we get more e-mails from people who have fiddled with these options and then say the screensaver is malfunctioning.

What's the extra program in some downloads?

All file downloads on this site are stored on 'Theme Sites' such as Screens and Themes, EZThemes and Themes Unlimited. These sites now "repackage" the files. Although I have asked that my files not be repackaged and haven't been, for the time being, that may not always be the case. Themes stored at EZThemes have not given me that option.

This repackaging, adds several programs, but all add a program called Gator to the file package (though that could change based on the advertiser). This is necessary due to the dramatic drop in advertising revenue. None of us want to see these sites go to a fee basis. This repackaging affects the high volume theme sites, so you will eventually be encountering this on all theme sites.

The good news is that you don't have to install these extra programs in order to install the theme. During installation there will be a screen that will ask you if you want to install the program. Make sure the box is not checked to install if you don't want it installed. If you choose to install the program, or change your mind during installation, you will be asked again later on as it accesses the site to finish the installation. Basically, you're given two chances to determine if you want to install the additional software or not. If you choose to install the program, you will receive a cookie that will prevent further installations of the software (unless advertisers change).

If you installed Gator and have a firewall, you will notice that you will be asked if you want to run FSG.EXE. That is the Gator program attempting to complete installation. If you change your mind about installation at this point and can't delete the fsg.exe program, reboot your computer and then delete it.

If you installed Gator by accident and want it off your computer, you may want to do more than simply uninstall it due to the nature of the program. There is a fantastic freeware product on the net called Ad-aware. It will seek out "spyware" (programs that transmit demographic information or info about your browsing). When you run it it will give you the ability to completely remove it from your system including cookies and registry entries. If you have Norton Utilities you probably have noticed that a typical uninstall often leaves bits and pieces behind. I run Ad-aware regularly and love it. The URL to download this small program is http://www.lavasoftusa.com.

Just for your information, there's a lot of spyware out there. Some people really don't care, but if you want to stay away from it, here are the most common. Adware (not to be confused with Ad-Aware), Alexa 1.0-5.0, Aureate v1.0, 2.0 and 3.0, Bonzo Buddy, Comet Cursor v1.0 and v2.0, Cydoor, Doubleclick, DSSAgent, EverAd, Flyswat, Gator, OnFlow-Player, TimeSink v1.0,v2.0 and v5.0, Web3000 and Webhancer. Ad-Aware will remove all of these programs if you want it to.
